Legislation sponsored by Senator Kip Bateman that would establish an online electronic public records access service on the Board of Public Utilities’ web site was approved by the Senate and now awaits consideration by the Governor.

The bill bipartisan bill, A-4556/4145/S-2611, requires Board of Public Utilities to utilize the access service to provide advance notice of every public meeting and hearing conducted by the board seven days prior to the meeting date.
“These long overdue improvements will enhance efficiency and transparency at BPU,” said Bateman (R-16). “It is about time to update the process, make it easier for users to submit filings and make comments, and improve public access to documentation, rulemakings and meeting schedules.”
Bateman said the bill would also make is easier for ratepayers to stay informed about changes that could affect their pocketbooks and services.
“Improved access will benefit members of the public who wish to comment on BPU hearings or actions,” said Bateman. “They can make their opinions known and participate in the decision-making process, and this measure will increase transparency and accountability.”
