“Due to the current health crisis, many public institutions of higher education have engaged in remote learning,” said Kean (R-21). “This bill will allow veterans and their family members to continue to pay in-State tuition during any period of mandatory remote instruction—even if they are living outside of New Jersey during that period.”

Under the “New Jersey Tuition Equality for America’s Military (NJTEAM) Act,” a veteran or other “covered individual,” such as a veteran’s spouse or child, who qualifies for certain federal educational assistance, resides in New Jersey, and attends a public institution of higher education, is considered to be a State resident for tuition purposes. As a State resident, they are eligible to pay an in-State tuition rate regardless of the individual’s state of residence.

Kean’s bill, S-2553, would amend the NJTEAM Act, and allow veterans and family members to continue to pay in-State tuition during any period of mandatory remote instruction due to a public health emergency, even if they are living outside of New Jersey during such period.

“So many families have had living, work, and education arrangements thrown into disarray by COVID-19,” added Kean. “It’s my hope that this legislation will offer some financial relief and stability to veterans and their loved ones during this difficult time.”
