Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris, Somerset) to reduce wait times at New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission locations was passed by the New Jersey Senate.

Sen. Anthony Bucco’s bill would change expiration dates on driver’s licenses, shortening lines at MVC offices. (NJMVC)

“When every license expires at the end of the month, it can lead to a nightmare situation at MVC offices if a lot of people decide to wait until the last minute to renew,” Senator Bucco said. “This measure will improve efficiency by cutting down on the long lines and helping people get their new licenses faster.”

The bill, S-2564, would change expiration dates on driver’s licenses to the day of an individual’s birthday, rather than the last day of the month.

The legislation was specifically written with the intent to reduce the lines and wait times at Motor Vehicle Commission offices throughout the state. Officials already encourage drivers to get their business done during off-peak, mid-month periods. However, this legislation would put that codify that practice in order to shorten lines for people who still might wait until the last day to renew their license.

“Staggering the expiration dates will lead to shorter wait times at the MVC, which is something everyone can appreciate,” Senator Bucco said. “If we can do this, and get more people to take advantage of our online renewal system, we can take to make the experience of getting a license a little easier.”
