Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco and Senator Joe Pennacchio simplifying the process to obtain a county veteran identification card has cleared the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. “Simplifying this process will ensure more veterans have access to the discounts and services provided to veterans returning home to New Jersey,” Senator Bucco (R-Morris) said. “Having a county ID card proving veteran status is more than just a convenience – it is a special designation that recognizes the heroic sacrifices made by the thousands of brave service men and women across New Jersey.”
Currently, veterans must submit a DD-214 form in order to be eligible to receive a county veteran identification card. The Senators’ bill, S-1771, would allow other approved separation forms, as specified by all branches of the military, to be accepted from an applicant for a county veteran identification card.
Under the bill, veterans who have served in the National Guard in other states would now be eligible to receive a veteran ID card in New Jersey. Currently, only veterans who have served in the National Guard in this state are eligible to receive the identification.
“A number of veterans in my district have served this country bravely, yet are still unable to access a county veteran identification card,” Senator Pennacchio (R-Essex, Morris, Passaic) said. “This is unconscionable. As Americans, we have a responsibility to support our troops on and off the battlefield. By allowing New Jersey veterans to supply valid separation forms other than a DD-214, they too can participate in the programs and services that are available to them here in the state they call home.”
The Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs would be required to assist in the identification and verification of acceptable forms of separation.
S-1771 is among many New Jersey Senate Republicans bills to fight for equal opportunities for the disabled, and protections and care for those who safeguard our nation from harm.
