During today’s Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee hearing on the DEP, Senator Steve Oroho, R-Sussex, Warren, Morris, also a member of the Senate Economic Growth Committee, commended the DEP’s continuing transformation and issued the following statement:
“Over the last two years, the DEP has undergone a significant change in working to become a more responsive, efficient and effective agency. I’m hopeful the agency’s continued improvement will distance us from the past, during which the DEP impeded progress in our state with costly and lengthy permitting processes, and exceedingly burdensome regulations.
“As the economy rebounds, we can increase our economic competitiveness by having a DEP that protects our environment without imposing unnecessary burdens on job creation. I applaud Governor Christie and DEP Commissioner Martin for establishing a conditional waiver opportunity designed to provide flexibility to spur economic growth while protecting the environment in a transparent process similar to municipal zoning variance procedures.
“The DEP’s customer service and constituent awareness initiatives are equally commendable. Commissioner Martin has done an excellent job investing in essential customer service training for more than 99 percent of staff members, demonstrating a true commitment to public service and transparency.
“As a member of the Red Tape Review Commission, I look forward to helping Commissioner Martin in his continuing effort to transform the overly bureaucratic nature of the DEP.”
