Pennacchio Lauds Federal Ruling on Benefits Reform

Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris/Essex/Passaic) applauds Monday’s U.S. District Court ruling, dismissing several New Jersey unions’ attempts to avoid their part in necessary benefits reform.

“Judge Anne Thompson’s decision is in the best interests of taxpayers and our pension systems,” Pennacchio said.

Monday’s ruling from Trenton dismissed the unions’ case on jurisdictional grounds, meaning unions, including NJEA and PBA, can re-file their challenge, in part, to higher benefit contribution rates in state court or appeal in the circuit court of appeals.

“Last year, we, as a Legislature, with Governor Christie, achieved bipartisan, landmark benefits reforms to save this and future generations from the daunting task of overcoming benefit systems that were volatile and on the road to collapse,” Pennacchio noted. “Everyone must contribute a fair share to stabilize our systems and economy.”
