Senate Republican Leader and education reform advocate Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) issued the following reaction to the latest Quinnipiac University poll showing strong support for education reform ideas put forth by Senate Republicans and Governor Christie:
The public fundamentally understands that dollars alone will not provide a quality education for every student in the State of New Jersey.
With bipartisan support for reform initiatives building in the Legislature and strong support by the Governor, it appears that the only ones still mired in the dark ages of education policy are the Supreme Court and those in organized labor content to chalk failure up to “life not being fair”.
An education policy for the 21st century that ensures every child in our state has access to a quality learning environment will couple adequate and appropriate funding with a renewed focus on teacher quality, accountability, and innovation.
Years of throwing money at the problem without changing anything else about our schools have not yielded the results to which our children are entitled. I look forward to working with Senator Ruiz and legislators from both sides of the aisle to implement changes to tenure, teacher evaluations, hiring, and pay structure that the public is demanding.
We need to get the job done this year.
