Bucco/Oroho Bill Establishing ‘Lake Hopatcong Fund’ Approved by Senate Committee

Legislation sponsored by Senators Anthony Bucco and Steven Oroho that would establish a funding stream for the maintenance of Lake Hopatcong has been advanced by the Senate Environment and Energy Committee.

S-495 would dedicate $400,000 in state pleasure boat registration fee revenue to a newly created “Lake Hopatcong Fund,” which would pay for preservation and cleanup projects at the state’s largest freshwater lake.

“The condition of Lake Hopatcong has deteriorated without a dedicated stream of revenue to fund its upkeep and management,” said Bucco (R- Morris). “The lake is important to the environmental and economic interests of New Jersey, and we need to ensure that preservation efforts receive their share of state funding.”

“The Lake Hopatcong Commission is an excellent steward of this environmental resource, but it can only do so much without a dedicated funding stream,” said Oroho (R- Sussex). “Using a portion of existing boat registration revenues to pay for essential needs identified by the Commission makes both fiscal and environmental sense.”
