Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) issued the following statement regarding Senate Democrats’ increasingly evident intention of breaking its promise of confirmation hearings for the nominations of Phil Kwon and Bruce Harris to the New Jersey Supreme Court:

“I am deeply disappointed that the Senate Majority seems intent on breaking the Senate President’s promise of speedy confirmation hearings for Phil Kwon and Bruce Harris.”

“The judicial confirmation process has been overly politicized and hijacked for use as a bargaining chip to achieve things that have nothing to do with the purpose of putting qualified individuals on the bench.”

“Phil Kwon and Bruce Harris have lengthy records of legal service and service to their state and communities. They have been educated at outstanding schools of law.”

“Their qualifications are as strong as, if not better than, many sitting and former Associate Justices on the New Jersey Supreme Court.”

“If Senators of either party have questions for or concerns about either of the nominees, the time to ask those questions is during a public confirmation hearing. The nominees deserve, our Constitution requires, and the Senate President promised such hearings without delay.”
