“What beaches mean to Jersey Shore communities in summertime, campgrounds mean to the Skylands region during the summer season,” said Oroho. “The NJ Campground Owners Association has submitted a responsible plan to the governor’s office which incorporates safety protocols. Let’s give them the green light too!”

While happy to see today’s announcement that additional sectors have been given the green light to restart business operations, Senator Steve Oroho (R-24) said the Murphy Administration can be moving even quicker to reopen the economy by reviewing detailed business reopening plans submitted to the governor’s office by business coalitions and individual industry groups that incorporate accepted social distancing practices.

“Business and industry have put responsible plans together that will enable them to resume operations while respecting safety protocols,” said Oroho. “We shouldn’t need governmental committees and subcommittees to come up with additional plans that will likely reach similar conclusions. We are at such a critical time where many businesses are seriously in jeopardy of not even being able to reopen, and more delay will certainly be the death knell to so many.”

LD1 Team Says Governor’s Approach Will Cause Unnecessary Economic Harm to South Jersey

Legislators representing the 1st Legislative District blasted Governor Phil Murphy’s announcement that regions of New Jersey that have recovered from the coronavirus will not be allowed to reopen as soon as they are ready.

Senator Michael Testa and Assemblymen Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan (all R-1) said the governor’s approach will lead to a longer lockdown than otherwise necessary in some parts of New Jersey, causing unnecessary economic harm to the South Jersey and Jersey Shore communities they represent.

“Governor Murphy may want to look at a calendar,” said Senator Michael Testa. “Memorial Day is almost here and our tourism dependent economy will be hit extra hard for every day beyond then that he forces our community to stay locked down. It’s absurd that his administration’s planning doesn’t account for regional differences in recovery trends and local planning. Cape May County, for example, has a thoughtful and detailed plan to allow for reopening around Exit 0 to happen safely once restrictions are lifted. Governor Murphy needs to recognize that the 1st Legislative District is not densely populated like much of North Jersey. We shouldn’t be treated the same. The harm he will cause our community by delaying reopening is completely unnecessary and will have life-altering, long-lasting effects.”

Says with Summer Season Approaching, Time is Running Out for Local Shops

Senator Michael Testa, in a press conference to highlight the plight of small businesses in New Jersey, said “with summer around the corner, we are sounding the alarm.” If small shop owners can’t reopen soon, many may be lost forever, he warned.

“Small shops and eateries are locked up tight. Most establishments down the shore are family-owned, multi-generational businesses,” said Testa (R-1). “Many of these are capable and willing to reopen while abiding by CDC guidelines, but as the shutdown goes on, it has the potential to have a multi-year impact that devastates the shore economy.”

Holzapfel, McGuckin & Catalano to Gov. Murphy: “Now Is the Time to Reopen Businesses”

Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Greg McGuckin and John Catalano are introducing a resolution today calling on Governor Phil Murphy to begin the immediate reopening of businesses in accordance with CDC guidelines to restart the New Jersey economy. The 10th District legislators stressed the importance of opening businesses on the Jersey Shore that rely on the summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day for the majority of their annual income. Without a plan to reopen before Memorial Day, many business owners at the shore are concerned for their futures and livelihoods.

“Governor Murphy, give New Jerseyans the benefit of the doubt. We are not knuckleheads and we can reopen with safety in mind by following the guidelines set forth by the CDC,” stated Senator Holzapfel. “With schools permanently closed for the year, our efforts need to be focused on reopening our small businesses.”

Says Governor Should Use Detailed Plans as Basis for Reopening Economy Safely

Senator Steven Oroho urged Governor Phil Murphy to work with businesses and industries that have already produced detailed plans to reopen safely and get New Jerseyans back to work instead of waiting on additional bureaucratic government committees that will only delay our economic recovery.

“Individual employers and industry groups representing tens of thousands of small businesses have been hard at work since day one of the shutdown nearly two months ago producing detailed plans that would allow them to reopen safely as soon as restrictions are lifted,” said Oroho (R-24). “No one is advocating reopening without appropriate safety protocols in place, but every day we delay another business will never reopen its doors.”

“I’m glad to see the governor move today to reopen our parks and golf courses,” said Oroho. “States in our region have shown that you can reopen these venues safely with social distancing guidelines in place and we can now join them. I hope as industries share plans with the governor on how they can protect consumers and employees while getting back to work, that the governor continues to demonstrate trust in them. Our economy desperately needs businesses to get back on their feet and our residents need to return to some sense of normalcy.”
