“I am beyond glad the State’s only drive-in movie theater can be open. However, this is a just a drop in the bucket, helping a few businesses when there are so many other dying small and mid-size enterprises desperate for relief,” said Senator Michael Testa. “The Governor’s actions announced today are long overdue. They should have been done three or four weeks ago.

“A functional unemployment office during an economic downtown is the the epitome of an essential public service, yet hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans continue to go without the unemployment benefits they’ve earned for weeks on end,” said Testa (R-1). “We are calling for an end to busy signals, broken websites, and unanswered emails from the Department of Labor.”

“Senate Republicans are working hard to serve the families and communities we represent in all corners of New Jersey during this extremely difficult time. Keeping people safe is the highest priority of government,” said Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean (R-21). “Over the last seven weeks, the members of our caucus have had conversations with tens of thousands of people who are struggling with different aspects of the governor’s executive orders that shut down large segments of the Garden State economy. We believe Governor Murphy should listen to the common concerns we’ve received from our constituents and take immediate action on our recommended solutions.”
The top three concerns raised by our constituents across New Jersey include:
- Fixing the broken unemployment system
- Addressing nonsensical disparities in business restrictions
- Allowing New Jerseyans to access all health care and dental services

“Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend and many small local shops rely heavily on these holidays for their business. The Administration needs to strongly consider reopening small gift shops with social distancing protocols similar to food stores; 50 percent capacity, masks, and social distancing. Or even allow them to consider a curbside gift pickup option. In addition, jewelry stores should be allowed to open with a 50 percent capacity limitation.

“In times of crisis, residents turn to their faith for strength and comfort,” said Pennacchio. “There is growing pressure on the Administration to lift the prohibition on worship service gatherings. There should have been room on the commission for a representative from the clergy to ensure Constitutionally protected religious rights are upheld.”
Bucco Teams with Morris County Chamber to Launch COVID Economic Advisory Committee
Business Leaders to Drive Recommendations on Immediate and Long-Term Recovery
Senator Anthony Bucco and the Morris County Chamber of Commerce announced the formation of a COVID Economic Advisory Committee to develop specific recommendations that can have immediate positive impacts on local businesses, married with ways to safely reopen the economy as the State emerges from this crisis. “Too often, leaders in government create policies and economic funding formulas that sound good on paper, but miss the mark because many politicians have no experience running businesses or creating jobs,” said Senator Anthony Bucco. “We need business leaders of all sizes to have a voice in the simple ways we orderly and safely get people back to work now, while addressing the long-term measures that can get New Jersey back stronger after the pandemic. For example, our lake-based marinas are permitted to be open for personal boating use, but unable to rent boats and generate sales – which could be done safely with occupancy limits. We’ve already had successes with cutting red-tape for things like craft brewery deliveries and online car sales, and there is still more to do. I’m excited to get to work with the Morris County Chamber.”
