Governor Chris Christie has signed legislation sponsored by Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean (R-Union, Somerset) to fund upgrades and improvements at New Jersey’s public colleges and universities.

Sen. Tom Kean’s bill appropriates $34.3 million for upgrades to NJ’s public colleges and universities. The funds are provided by the “Building Our Future Bond Act,” a voter-approved law sponsored by Sen. Kean and signed into law in 2012.  (

The law, S-2897, appropriates the remaining $34.3 million from the “Building Our Future Bond Act,” voter-approved legislation sponsored by Senator Kean to fund capital improvement projects at public institutions of higher education statewide.

“More and more high school grads are choosing to pursue a career in STEM-related fields, such as nursing or engineering. They shouldn’t have to travel out of state to study at a school with a state-of-the art research facility or lab,” Senator Kean said. “This appropriation will help our top-notch colleges and universities evolve to meet the needs of incoming students.”

The projects funded by S-2897 include: a new life sciences and engineering research facility at NJIT; a state-of-the art technology-equipped instructional and research building at Stevens Institute of Technology; a reconstruction of the William Paterson University Hunziker Building for laboratories and general use classrooms; renovations to the Edison Science Building at Monmouth University; a new Art Therapy facility at Caldwell University; and a new Health Sciences Building at Union County College.

Signed into law in 2012, Senator Kean’s “Building Our Future Bond Act” provides a $750 million bond for investments in New Jersey’s public colleges and universities.

“Providing a world-class higher education for New Jersey students is the best investment we can make in our State’s economy,” Senator Kean said. “More often than not, those who study here will work and raise a family here after they graduate. Every dollar well spent under my ‘Building Our Future Bond Act’ will help college grads gain the knowledge and experience they need to compete in today’s job market.”
