The legislation (S-3442) requires the Department of Transportation (DOT), the New Jersey Transit Corporation (NJT) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) to review current infrastructure design practices for highway and public transportation projects.

“Our roads, buses and trains are not designed with people living with disabilities in mind,” said Kean (R-21). “We want to ensure residents who face mobility challenges have the same opportunity to travel that the rest of us enjoy. It is time to re-evaluate the way transportation systems are designed and built so all of our residents can benefit.”

Under Kean’s bill, the three agencies are also directed to conduct a study of nationwide best practices and identify ways to operate public roadway facilities and public transportation services so they are more accessible.

“Our state can do better, and this is a step in the right direction,” Kean said. “Mobility is not a luxury in today’s world. It is a necessity.”
