“Governor Murphy’s declaration of a new ‘Public Health Emergency’ in defiance of the Legislature demonstrates exactly why we must assert ourselves as a co-equal branch of government and limit his emergency powers,” said Doherty (R-23). “We’re supposed to have a governor with limited authority under our New Jersey Constitution, but Murphy has been empowered by the Legislature’s inaction to rule like a king. ”

Will Focus on Affordability & Returning New Jersey to Normal

Following the reorganization of the New Jersey Senate today, the Senate Republican leadership team laid out the priorities of the caucus for the next legislation session in a joint statement:

“First and foremost, Senate Republicans will focus on affordability and making the Garden State a place where young adults, families, and seniors can afford to live. After four years of inaction, we’re going to hold Governor Murphy’s feet to the fire now that he says he’s finally ready to listen to New Jerseyans and work on cost-of-living concerns.

“We also must focus on returning New Jersey back to normal now that’s it’s clear that COVID-19 isn’t going away. We cannot allow the Executive Branch to continue ignoring the New Jersey Constitution and circumventing the Legislature’s role as a co-equal branch of government. With a disease that is becoming endemic, we must return to the regular legislative process for managing any necessary policy changes. We will work with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to put an end to government by executive order.”

The new law, S-1790/A-1662, amends New Jersey’s Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights with specific requirements on school districts to help prevent and respond to bullying incidents.

“The Legislature has aggressively moved to control bullying in our schools, but it hasn’t been enough,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “Victims of bullying are prone to attack 24 hours a day by schoolmates or rivals texting from their phones or flexing social media muscles online.

“The men and women who serve our nation in the military deserve to have access to the benefits they earned without having to go through excessive government red tape,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “This legislation will allow a person who is still on active military duty, but who expects to be discharged soon, to begin the process of securing veterans’ preference. We have a responsibility to support these brave heroes on and off the battlefield. I’m glad to see this bill signed into law.”

“The small businesses that line our Main Streets have been struggling to survive since the start of the pandemic,” said Oroho (R-24). “During that time, they have had to purchase an enormous amount of extra equipment in order to expand outdoor operations during the fall and winter seasons. My legislation will provide targeted sales tax relief to these small businesses so that they can continue to keep their doors open and serve their communities.”

“It is inspiring to see a veteran who has honorably served our nation return home and continue serving their community. Unfortunately, there are professional scammers right here in New Jersey who make a living by deceiving others into thinking that they are veterans—in order to claim financial benefits that are reserved for our actual veterans,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “My legislation will increase the punishments for such crimes and help curb this despicable behavior going forward. All veterans should be provided easy access to the benefits they’ve earned, and anyone who knowingly impersonates a veteran in order to steal those benefits, should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

“This bill will provide a great service to so many veterans and loosen the stringent requirements for civil service preference that deny numerous veterans to this day,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “This change would not only allow veterans to find employment more quickly after leaving the armed forces, but it is a well-deserved benefit for these brave men and women and will make their transition from military to civilian life much easier.”

“Damage to crops from deer has become a crippling problem for many New Jersey farmers,” said Oroho (R-24). “In some instances, producers have abandoned fields that are too vulnerable to deer damage, and others have transitioned away from produce and row crops to hay, just to lessen the impact. By issuing grants for fencing, my legislation will provide a practical and humane method of protecting crops.”
