The bill (S-2645) would establish a New Jersey Transit ADA Task Force to study terminals, stations, and equipment operated by or under contract with NJ Transit for compliance with the federal requirements.

“Residents with disabilities often depend on public transportation to get to work, doctors’ appointments, school or shopping. They deserve every consideration required by the federal government,” said Kean (R-21). “This task force will work to prevent needed upgrades from falling through the cracks and ensure the interests of disabled commuters are being served.”

The nine-member task force would be required to compile a list of all improvements that must be completed so NJ Transit property and equipment is fully ADA compliant, and study the cost and feasibility of upgrades, including installing ramps at stations and stops.

“These are not things we should be doing for New Jersey’s disabled residents. They are things we must be doing. These are obligations,” said Kean, a member of the New Jersey Legislative Disability Caucus. “The ADA Task Force will serve as the voice of bus and train riders with disabilities.”

Under the bill, the task force would submit a report of its findings and recommendations no later than two years after the effective date.
