Legislation arising from the Caylee Anthony tragedy in Florida has been signed into law by Governor Christie.

The measure, “Caylee’s Law”, was sponsored in the state Senate by Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) and Diane Allen (R- Burlington). The law upgrades to a crime of the fourth degree failure to report the death of a person while creating a new crime, also of the fourth degree, of failing to report the disappearance of a child within 24 hours.

Senator Tom Kean, Jr.

America learned from the Caylee Anthony tragedy that there are some adults who are so irresponsible that they would not immediately report the death or disappearance of a child in their care to the proper authorities. Requiring swift reporting of these incidents will help in the apprehension of those responsible and is a further protection of minors from negligence of the adults who are supposed to care for them.

Diane Allen

No child should ever again be treated the way Caylee Anthony was, nor should any parent or caretaker be allowed to so recklessly ignore an emergency involving his or her child. Caylee’s Law remedies what was an apparent loophole in the law that could be exploited by a small number of individuals who carelessly put the well being of children at risk. In the case of a child who has disappeared, reporting could mean the difference between life and death.
