Responding to the resignation of embattled New Jersey Department of Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks, Senator Michael Testa (R-1) issued the following statement:

Senator Michael Testa today said the resignation of embattled New Jersey Department of Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks was long overdue and should have happened last year. (SenateNJ.com)

“Hicks’ departure will not solve the systemic problems within the Department of Corrections, but it is a necessary first step.

“Today’s news is long overdue. It should have happened a year ago. In May of last year, I called for the commissioner to step down or for Murphy to fire him for ineffective leadership during the pandemic that jeopardized the lives of prison employees and prisoners. The unthinkable atrocities at the Edna Mahan facility only strengthened the case against a man who was clearly in over his head.

“As usual, the Administration dragged its feet, and now they face the challenge of rebuilding the public’s trust in the state’s prison system.”
