“Small-dollar tax refunds and cancellations can create administrative inefficiencies within local governments,” said Stanfield (R-08). “By increasing the dollar limit for authorized municipal employees to process certain transactions, we can streamline this administrative process and reduce unnecessary bureaucratic red tape. This legislation would enable local governments to provide small-dollar refunds and certain cancellations for homeowners more efficiently.”

Under current law, municipal governments can authorize an employee to process refunds and certain cancellations related to property taxes that are $10 or less without needing further action by the local governing body.

Senator Stanfield’s bill, S-3843, would expand the scope of the existing law by raising the dollar limit from $10 to $20 or less.

“Homeowners deserve prompt assistance from their local governments when seeking resolutions to property tax related issues,” Stanfield added. “This bill can help alleviate some of the bureaucratic burden associated with processing certain payments and cancellations and enable municipal employees to deliver these services more quickly.”
