Nearly a Week After Snow Storm, Many Residents Remain Without Power

Senator Kip Bateman (R-16) has called for hearings to investigate why thousands of JCP&L customers remain without power nearly a week after service was disrupted by the October 29 snow storm that hit New Jersey. According to information released by JCP&L on Friday, nearly 15,000 of its customers remain in the dark six days after the storm passed.

“Following the lengthy outages that plagued thousands of state residents as a result of Hurricane Irene in August, New Jersey utilities had pledged to develop better response plans for future storms,” said Bateman. “With thousands of JCP&L customers still in the dark nearly a week after the season’s first snow storm, it appears that at least one utility has failed to respond as customers were promised. I intend to make sure that we find out why.”

Auditors Find $633 Million Missing from Client Accounts at Corzine’s MF Global

In light of a recent audit by regulators which found $633 million missing from client accounts at the failed investment firm of former Governor Jon Corzine, Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) has asked New Jersey Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff to determine if any state funds were affected by the collapse of Corzine’s firm, MF Global.

“It’s important that the State of New Jersey work quickly to identify any investment funds that may have been impacted by the bankruptcy of MF Global,” said Pennacchio. “While the rapid collapse of Corzine’s firm is disturbing in and of itself, the investigation of any state assets that may be at risk is given added importance by the fact that regulators have indicated that client accounts may have been inappropriately raided to support the firm’s bad investments.”

33% Hike in Down Economy Hurts Seniors and Families

Senator Michael Doherty, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement urging enactment of a program that will provide toll discounts for local residents who are impacted by the recently enacted toll hikes on Delaware River bridges.

“A 33% toll hike was not the right course of action to impose on working families and seniors during hard economic times. The Bridge Commission historically had a program that allowed local residents who relied on the bridges to receive discounts. I am calling on the Commission to issue coupons or tokens, as they did in the past, to offset the recent increase.”
