Legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Holzapfel (R-10) that seeks to keep loaded firearms out of the hands of unsupervised minors was approved by the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee.

“We’ve seen too many instances where children with access to a parent’s firearms engage in planned attacks harming others, and too many tragedies where children living in or visiting a home with unlocked and loaded firearms end up accidentally harming themselves,” said Holzapfel, a member of the committee. “This legislation balances the rights of responsible gun owners with the public interest of reducing preventable deaths from planned and accidental shootings.”

Singer Alimony Reform Signed Into Law

Legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer reforming New Jersey’s alimony laws to eliminate lifetime awards and establish guidelines for the amount and duration of awards has been signed into law by Governor Christie.

“These needed reforms will make sure a spouse who has faithfully met their financial obligation isn’t unfairly forced to work through retirement in order to continue making payments, while still making sure a dependent spouse is treated fairly after a divorce,” said Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean). “The state’s alimony laws were out of touch with today’s society where both partners in a marriage often have careers and unfairly overburdened spouses with crippling lifetime awards. Under these reforms, the courts will no longer be operating with an assumption that either spouse will be dependent on the other for the rest of their lives after a divorce.”

The package of bills will raise the profile of the “Farm to School” program by increasing the program’s presence on the state’s website and foster expansion of the “Farm to School” program to more schools by allowing for private investment into the program and by recognizing successful programs established by schools.

“The ‘Farm to School’ program provides students with healthy, nutritious meals while at the same time giving a boost to the local farmers in our communities who grow these crops,” said Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris). “By better promoting the program and allowing outside investment we can hopefully get even more ‘Jersey Fresh’ produce into cafeterias across the state. Bringing attention to and expanding this valuable program will give more students access to healthy lunch choices and help foster a deeper appreciation and knowledge of New Jersey’s important agriculture industry.”
