The 9th District Legislators issued the following statement regarding the Clean Communities Grants funding awarded to their constituent municipalities:

“Clean Communities Grants are essential to communities’ overall litter control efforts. As Coastal Legislators, we fully recognize the continuing need to prevent litter and harmful debris from entering our precious waterways, including Barnegat Bay, or building up on our pristine beaches. Effective uses of this funding authorized under State law, can include sponsorship of the ‘Adopt a Beach’ Program, the establishment of education programs to promote clean communities, graffiti abatement, and enforcement of local anti-littering laws.”

Sen. Sam Thompson and Assemblymen Ron Dancer and Rob Clifton (all R-Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Middlesex) have announced the towns in Legislative District 12 that are receiving Municipal Aid Grants and Transportation Enhancement Program Awards for Fiscal Year 2013.

The programs are administered by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and include improvement projects such as resurfacing roads or improving signalization. Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects are designed to protect environmental resources and to promote alternative modes of transportation. Funds are available for the design, right of way acquisition and construction of identified roadways.

“Assessing and upgrading the condition of a town’s local roads can be just as important as making improvements to major highways,” said Thompson. “Keeping vigilant about what areas need repair is a vital part of the services provided by a municipality. Driver safety and protecting our environmental resources are key responsibilities for a town and the funds awarded under these programs go a long way in achieving these purposes.”

Pennacchio Challenges Barchi to Assure Rice Payouts Don’t Impact Students, Taxpayers

Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris), challenged Rutgers University President Robert Barchi during today’s Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee to make sure payouts related to the Coach Mike Rice scandal don’t impact students or taxpayers.

“People do not want or deserve their tax dollars and tuition dollars to be spent on these payouts,” committee member Pennacchio emphasized. “Rutgers administrators caused this problem and should fund payouts out of their administrative budget. I look forward to an update from President Barchi and Rutgers administrators as to how they will be accountable for their $2.1 million payouts to failed public leaders.”

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean Jr. (R-Union, Morris, Somerset) applauded Gov. Christie for signing into law today the “Human Trafficking Prevention, Protection, and Treatment Act,” of which he is first co-sponsor.

“Millions of human trafficking victims are tortured in New Jersey and the world over via a growing, underground enterprise,” Kean said. “In this state, people of all ages and backgrounds are now better protected from this form of modern-day slavery. Law enforcement officers and prosecutors are more empowered to prevent criminals from physically and emotionally destroying lives in New Jersey.”

Democrats Obstruct GOP Ethics Measures

The following editorial by Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean Jr. (R-Union) to urge action on accountability, ethics and campaign finance reforms was published in Sunday’s Press of Atlantic City:

“Regarding the April 26 editorial, “Campaign-finance reform/Yeah, right …”:

You are correct that there is too much finger-pointing and not enough action in Trenton to make government accountable. So why don’t you join us in demanding answers from those who aren’t getting the job done?

The Democratic majority in this Legislature has total control over what bills are posted for votes, starting at the committee level. Despite our repeated public calls for action, Senate committee chairmen Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, and James Whelan, D-Atlantic, continue to ignore Republican measures to provide a pure, transparent government to New Jersey residents. Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Salem, Gloucester, Cumberland, who can force legislation through committees, has also neglected our bills to make government accountable at all levels in this state.

Homeowners Who Refuse to Sign Easements to Protect Views Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Keep Their Communities at Risk

Senator Michael Doherty (R-23) said that Governor Chris Christie is right to push for the construction of a protective dune system along the entirety of the Jersey Shore, despite the protests of some oceanfront homeowners who would rather keep entire communities at risk of future devastation to protect their water views from the lowest levels of their homes.

“Hurricane Sandy destroyed entire communities as its storm surge washed away or severely damaged hundreds of thousands of homes in communities along unprotected shorelines,” said Doherty. “Having just seen the massive scope of that devastation, it’s absolutely unbelievable that some selfish oceanfront homeowners would rather preserve their first floor views than allow us to build a protective dune system that would prevent this from happening again.”

Doherty: New Charges in Elizabeth Free School Lunch Scandal Reinforce Need for School Funding Reform

Senator Michael Doherty (R-23) said that new charges announced by the state Attorney General related to corruption and fraud in the Elizabeth school district’s free school lunch program are a reminder that New Jersey’s convoluted school funding formula needs to be reformed to prevent future abuse.

“The newest criminal charges announced by Attorney General Chiesa in Elizabeth are further confirmation that massive fraud exists in the free school lunch program,” said Doherty. “I want to congratulate the Attorney General for his persistence in bringing all of those who are complicit in this fraud to justice.”

Doherty noted that fraudulent enrollment in the school lunch program triggers other expenses that are even greater than the cost of the meals provided to students.
