Senator Robert W. Singer (R- Ocean/Mercer/Burlington/Monmouth) today lauded Governor Christie’s approval of $157 million in funding for local preservation and recreation projects. The funds were appropriated as part of New Jersey’s “Green Acres” program to help municipalities and counties acquire lands for preservation or recreational development.

“Preserving land for public benefit is all the more important when you live in the most densely populated state in America,” said Singer. “Since its inception, Green Acres has been highly successful in helping local government defray the cost of preserving or developing desirable spaces for recreational use. The latest round of funding authorized by law today will help communities in our area maintain the quality of life that residents expect and deserve.”

Tom Kean: “Green Acres Legislation Funding Local Preservation Projects Signed by Governor Christie”

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union), co-prime sponsor of S-2858, appropriating nearly $15 million for environmental conservation projects, said that local recreation and open space preservation projects will benefit from Governor Christie’s approval of his legislation. Kean’s legislation, along with two “Green Acres” bills, were signed by the Governor this morning.

“New Jersey, and particularly Northern New Jersey, is the most densely populated place in America,” said Senator Kean. “I want to thank the Governor for signing my legislation, as well as two other bills that will help municipalities and non-profit groups acquire and preserve green space for recreational and conservation purposes. Preserving what little open space we have left for public enjoyment is uniquely important to the quality of life in our communities. Our children should be able to look out the window or walk down the street to see trees and fields, not just more housing developments or shopping centers.”

Update on Cable/Telephone Deregulation Bill (A-3766/S-2664)

During caucus deliberations on the finalized State Budget, there was an interesting development not widely reported on regarding A-3766/S-2664, entitled the “Market Competition and Consumer Choice Act,” which would deregulate cable and phone services in our state and potentially lead to cost increases as well as the loss of consumer protections for ratepayers. More than 800 constituents have contacted our 9th District Legislative Office in opposition to this legislation in light of potentially sharp rate increases they can ill-afford during these extremely difficult economic times.

Behind closed doors at the State House, another attempt was made by supporters of the bill, both in the Legislature and in the business community, to have A-3766/S-2664 posted for a vote in the Senate at the 11th hour of the voting session prior to the Summer recess. Undoubtedly, this was done in the hope that the bill and the groundswell of public opposition to it would be overlooked, given all the attention that would be directed to the State Budget.

LIHEAP Aid Increased For 135,000 Eligible Households

Senate Republican Budget Officer Tony Bucco praised Governor Christie’s efforts today to identify additional funds to help senior citizens and the disabled cope with rising energy costs.

“This summer has seen an endless round of heat waves across the country. In New Jersey the last heat wave saw temperatures rise above the 100 degree mark on several occasions across the state.

“These high temperatures and the accompanying high humidity have created dangerous conditions for at risk populations. Senior citizens and the disabled are especially vulnerable to these conditions.

Plan Would Provide Equal Aid to All Students Per the NJ Constitution

Senator Michael Doherty, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee,¬†will deliver a presentation at the Milton Friedman Luncheon to be held at Vitale’s restaurant in Teaneck, New Jersey. The luncheon will honor what would have been Professor Friedman’s 99th birthday.

In response to the State Supreme Court’s decree, earlier this year, that the taxpayers of New Jersey spend an additional $500 million on chronically failing inner city schools, Senator Doherty is advancing a school funding plan based on a provision in the state constitution. The “Fair School Funding” plan would guarantee that every child equal school aid, regardless of their place of residence.

9th District Legislators Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove are supporting legislation to make it unlawful for first responders to disseminate photographs or video recordings of accident victims to the public without the consent of a victim, patient or their next-of-kin if the victim or person cannot provide consent.

Senator Connors is the prime sponsor of legislation (S-2891) in the Senate, while Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove have joined as cosponsors on the companion bill (A-2274). The 9th District Legislators’ actions are in response to outreach from several constituents who have been affected by this issue, as well as first aid and emergency response personnel supportive of a State law to prohibit footage from accident scenes from being made available to the public without permission.

$90 Million Increase for “Senior Freeze” Property Tax Assistance in 2012 Budget

Senator Robert Singer (R-Ocean) issued the following statement today after the Christie administration announced that they have already begun mailing Senior Freeze checks to senior and disabled homeowners. Checks for the Senior Freeze program, which protects senior citizens and disabled residents from increases in property taxes, will average more than $1,200 this year, going directly to recipients who earned $70,000 or less in 2009 and 2010.

“We are in a position to increase direct property tax relief for seniors and disabled residents because of the fiscal discipline shown over the past two years by Governor Christie and my Republican colleagues.

Tom Kean: “Money Without Innovation, Accountability Fails New Jersey School Children”

Lauding the Christie Administration’s announcement that the state will expand its partnership with Harlem Children’s Zone to include other struggling school districts, Senate Republican Leader and Education Committee member Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) called on Senate leadership to allow debate and votes on legislation aimed at increasing accountability and innovation in New Jersey public schools.

“Proper funding of education for every school district in New Jersey is important, but funding alone doesn’t get results for our children,” said Kean. “If money alone were the answer, New Jersey’s inner cities would have the highest graduation rates, test scores, and educational outcomes of any district in America because they spend more per student than almost anywhere in the nation. Innovation and accountability, currently lacking in our public school system, is key to making every dollar we spend on education work better for students in every school district, regardless of economic status.”
