Kean & Corrado: Sexual Assault Detailed in WSJ Story Should Serve As a Call to Action for the NJ Legislature
Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Senator Kristin Corrado said new details of an alleged sexual assault by a former campaign worker of Governor Phil Murphy reinforce the need for legislative hearings into the administration’s hiring practices, and said the difficulties experienced by the victim in seeking justice should prompt a review of New Jersey’s criminal and civil statutes regarding sexual assault.

“The sexual assault alleged by Ms. Brennan was just the beginning of a story that is both heartbreaking and all too common among the victims of sex crimes,” said Kean. “Despite taking every reasonable step that a person subject to such a traumatic assault could be expected to take, Ms. Brennan was unable to find justice in either a court of law or with her employer. This should serve as a call to action for the Legislature to address these issues immediately.”

Connors, Rumpf & Gove: Hiring of Convicted Public Official Typifies NJ’s Extremist Policies
Calling it a clear betrayal of the public trust, Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove questioned how the Murphy Administration could rationalize, legally and morally, hiring a corruption-convicted ex-public official for a $70,000-a-year job with the New Jersey Department of Education.

“When a family buys a product, they have to pay their bills on time,” Senator Oroho stated. “Vendors who do business with local governments must be paid just as quickly. There’s no reason municipalities should stall payments that could put small businesses at risk.”

“For-profit companies must pay their fair share of taxes,” Corrado said. “Currently, money-making cemeteries have been benefiting from a nonprofit system. This is unfair. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill.”

“This is welcome news. Suspending these burdensome rules will offer government and industry leaders the ability to re-work regulations so breweries can successfully operate in this state. Our ultimate goal should be to support our businesses while allowing residents to continue to enjoy craft breweries as they grow in popularity. We can, and should, get this right without pitting certain industries against one another. We stand ready to work with our legislative colleagues on a viable solution.”
Corrado Calls for Legislative Hearings on Murphy Admin’s Hiring of Convicted Politician
Senator Kristin Corrado called for legislative hearings to determine how a former politician convicted of bribery could be hired into the Murphy Administration despite state laws prohibiting the employment of corrupt officials in government positions. Corrado’s call for hearings was made in a letter to Senate President Steve Sweeney.

“Governor Murphy’s suggestion that his administration conducted a legal review that supported the hiring of Marcellus Jackson despite his prior conviction on federal corruption charges doesn’t pass the smell test,” said Corrado. “Both the Attorney General and the Office of Legislative Services have said the hiring is a violation of New Jersey law. We must hold legislative hearings to determine where the process broke down and how it can be fixed going forward to maintain the public’s trust in government.”
Oroho/Space/Wirths Statement on ABC Brewery Regulations
Following the announcement of the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s (ABC) special ruling on breweries, District 24 legislators Senator Steve Oroho, Assemblyman Parker Space, and Assemblyman Hal Wirths issued the following statement in support of New Jersey’s brewery workers and entrepreneurs.

“We must do more to encourage business growth in our state. Forcing breweries to limit events is an obstacle that will inhibit their development,” Oroho said. “Breweries have become extremely popular and an integral part of our tourism industry. Events at breweries also build community and bring people together – often for a good cause. I would not want to see burdensome regulations deter such opportunities. The ABC’s new regulations have gone too far, and I believe we can arrive at a better solution that ensures that breweries and restaurants can not only coexist, but thrive.”
