Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso (both R-Monmouth) today praised Governor Murphy’s announcement that the Department of Education would be issuing guidance to allow for in-person Extended School year and special education services beginning July 6.

Senator O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman DiMaso lauded today’s announcement that the Department of Education would soon issue guidance allowing in-person education services, but said decision comes too late for many necessary summer programs. (Pixabay)

“We commend the Governor for finally listening to parents and officials who have been asking for weeks to allow for special education students to have access to the crucial face-to-face services that they require.

“So many parents have expressed heartbreaking stories to us of their children regressing due to restrictions to in-person services, and the challenges that they have faced attempting to navigate virtual learning with developmentally disabled children.

“Unfortunately, while this will allow for some programs and ESY to proceed, the July 6 start date comes too late for a number of other programs and summer camps that usually need May and June to prepare for the needs of this population of children.

“Hopefully, the administration will continue to increase access to even more services, including critical in-person mental health services. Particularly as so many are struggling during this crisis.”
