“For the thousands of veterans that have already gone through the process of receiving an ID card from their county this legislation will now simplify the process of adding their status as a veteran to their license,” said Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris). “This special designation on a driver’s license is a well-deserved symbol of a veteran’s life of patriotism, heroism and sacrifice. Now that this legislation has been signed into law I hope more veterans will seek out this worthy distinction on their license and be able to receive the recognition and appreciation they have earned.”

Senator Oroho’s S-2508 allows veterans to use their county-issued veteran ID card as proof of their status as a veteran when applying to the state Motor Vehicle Commission for a veteran designation on their license. Under the law, a county ID could only be used if the county that issued it required veterans to show their discharge papers in applying for the ID.

In 2011 Senator Oroho helped Sussex County become the first in the state to issue veterans ID cards and also sponsored legislation that was signed into law in 2012 sanctioning county clerks across the state to issue identification cards to veterans. Since then, more than 2,000 veterans in Sussex County have received the ID cards, which more than 140 businesses throughout the county honor with a discount.

“Aside from being a point of pride, having a county ID or a driver’s license with a veteran designation allows former service members working on behalf of veterans’ organizations and charities to easily identify themselves,” Oroho added. “And as is the case in Sussex County, many stores and restaurants in New Jersey give discounts to veterans who can show a county ID card or license with their veteran status on it.”
