A resolution sponsored by Senator Jim Holzapfel (R-10) that seeks to expand air service to Atlantic City and surrounding attractions through the recruitment of new carriers to Atlantic City Airport was approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.

The resolution, SR-75, urges the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), the owner of the airport, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), the manager of the airport, to identify and recruit additional airlines to the airport.

“The addition of new carriers and flights to Atlantic City Airport is critical to our efforts to grow the South Jersey economy through increased tourism to Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore,” said Holzapfel. “Currently, less than one percent of visitors to Atlantic City arrive by air each year. To expand our reach, we need to be more accessible to people from beyond our immediate region who can’t easily drive to us.”

Following the departure or AirTran Airways early last year, Spirit Airways has remained as the only primary carrier serving Atlantic City Airport. United Airlines, however, has announced plans to begin daily service in April of 2014 from the airport to Chicago and Houston, major hubs that put Atlantic City within one stop of many new potential domestic and international source markets.

“A substantial investment has been made to expand and upgrade the infrastructure at Atlantic City Airport to prepare for expanded service,” said Holzapfel. “Now we need to proactively recruit airlines and show them how the airport has changed and improved.”

Under the terms of a recently negotiated agreement with the SJTA, the PANYNJ has assumed general management services at the airport and will be responsible for marketing and developing additional air service.

“The Port Authority manages a number of successful high volume airports, including Newark, JFK and LaGuardia, so it was a smart move to enlist their help,” added Holzapfel. “The successful recruitment of United was one of the first major dividends of this collaboration, and I hope it is just the first of many. The economic impact on the region from expanded service at Atlantic City Airport could be substantial.”
