“The benefits afforded by Meals on Wheels and other mobile providers are invaluable to residents across the state,” said Holzapfel (R-10). “Our support of these beneficial nonprofits will help yield more and better services for those who need assistance. This is a step toward a stronger New Jersey.”

The bill, S-138, exempts vehicles owned and operated by local food programs for the assistance of seniors from motor vehicle registration fees. The measure would apply to cars owned by Meals on Wheels America members and other eligible nonprofit entities that provide important assistance, including addiction services and programs for individuals with mental or behavioral health needs.

“The nonprofit organizations that qualify under our bill have earned this cost-saving measure through their vital contributions to the well-being of New Jersey residents,” said Bucco (R-26). “Meals on Wheels volunteers are out there every day ensuring that seniors have access to the nourishing food they need. This kind of personal service depends on reliable vehicles, and we’ll help reduce the organization’s costs of keeping them on the road.”

The bill stipulates that to qualify under the program, vehicles cannot be driven for pleasure or be available for hire.
