“For too long, Governor Murphy and Trenton Democrats have ignored South Jersey and chosen a few favored towns with connections to party bosses to get relief while everyone else has gotten nothing,” said Durr (R-3). “Senate Republicans believe that every town and county in New Jersey deserves a fair share of property tax relief. Under our plan, local governments in the 3rd Legislative District would receive more than $100 million to pay down debt, reduce property taxes, or fund local projects of their choosing, including paving roads and building parks.”

Durr’s legislation, S-3906, would allocate $4.32 billion to towns and counties from the New Jersey Debt Defeasance and Prevention Fund. The money would be disbursed on a per capita basis, which means every local government would get a fair share based on population.

If the bill is enacted, estimated awards for the county governments in the 3rd Legislative District include:

CountyAllocation Under S-3906
Cumberland County$21,573,660
Gloucester County$42,306,217
Salem County$9,073,975

Durr’s legislation allows for the funds to be used by local governments to retire existing local debt or to fund capital projects that otherwise would have been funded with debt on a pay-as-you-go basis.

“Governor Murphy has been sitting on billions of dollars of taxpayer funds for years while desperate New Jerseyans have been waiting for relief,” Durr added. “Republicans want to ‘Give It Back’ to towns, counties, and property taxpayers immediately. There is no other plan offered by anyone that would provide New Jerseyans as much tax relief as what my Senate Republican colleagues and I have proposed.”

The proposal would not impact the State Budget since the funds that would be dedicated to property tax relief by the legislation have already been slated to be available in the State’s debt relief fund and have yet to be allocated for another purpose.

The bill is sponsored by Senator Durr and every member of the Senate Republican caucus.
