Doherty: Problem for Trenton High School Isn’t Money, It’s People

Senator Mike Doherty (R-Hunterdon, Somerset, Warren) called on Senator Barbara Buono and other state Democrats to focus on the real issue behind the condition of Trenton High School: budget and building managers.

“Rather than trying to use Trenton High School in a baseless crusade against Gov. Christie, Senator Buono and others should work toward solving the problem with that school’s physical condition,” Doherty said. “The Trenton school district gets more than enough state tax dollars each year from residents across New Jersey to maintain its buildings and grounds.”

Senator Doherty noted that according to the state Department of Education, the Trenton City school district is getting more aid this year than the total for all of the school districts in Bergen County combined.

The Trenton school district is also getting more aid this year than the total for all of the school districts in Morris County combined. The Trenton school district is also getting more aid this year than the total for all of the school districts in Somerset County combined. This is the case with five other counties, as well (Cape May, Hunterdon, Salem, Sussex and Warren).

“School districts in those eight counties are able to maintain dozens of school buildings just fine,” Doherty said. “The problem for Trenton High School isn’t a lack of money. It’s the people who are in charge of the district’s spending and building management.”

Senator Doherty pointed out, for example, that the Trenton school district is getting $227 million in total aid this year or about $18,714 per pupil, while all of the school districts in Morris County are getting a combined $143 million in total aid or about $1,835 per pupil.

“Officials who have faced no accountability for acting irresponsibly or who are not up to the task of managing schools should be replaced,” Doherty concluded. “The problem with Trenton High School must be corrected at that core level. This isn’t an issue for the political arena where Democrats like Barbara Buono are pushing to waste more of the public’s money to score points with special interest groups.”
