Legislation (S-2236) sponsored by Senator Michael Doherty (R-23) to name the Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge on Route 22 in honor of fallen Marine Corps Reserve Sgt. William Cahir has been signed into law by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

United States Marine Corps Reserve Sgt. William J. Cahir

“Many of us in the area knew of Bill Cahir from his service in Hunterdon and Warren counties in New Jersey and Lehigh and Northampton counties in Pennsylvania as a reporter for the Express-Times prior to his enlistment,” said Doherty. “It’s more than fitting that we designate the span linking our communities the ‘Sergeant William John Cahir Memorial Bridge’ in his honor.”

Despite being 34 years in age, nearly twice the age of most new recruits, Sgt. Cahir obtained an age waiver to enlist in the Marine Corps Reserve after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

He completed two tours of duty in Iraq and was deployed to Afghanistan where he was killed by enemy fire while on patrol in Helmand Province on August 13, 2009. Sgt. Cahir is survived by his wife and twin daughters, who were born after his death.

Since the Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge is operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, a bi-state agency, the legislation to designate the bridge in Sgt. Cahir’s honor must be enacted by both New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

“I urge my colleagues in the Pennsylvania Legislature to enact this measure as New Jersey has,” added Doherty. “Bill Cahir served our states and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. This is a small way that we can honor and remember all he has done on our behalf.”
