The Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee today voted to release legislation (S-122) introduced by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove (all R-Ocean/Burl./Atl.) that would require a portion of tenant-based assistance vouchers under the State Rental Assistance Program be reserved for grants to veterans.

“Tenant vouchers provide desperately needed housing assistance to more veterans who have fallen on hard times,” said Senator Connors, who serves as the ranking Republican member on the Committee. “Our legislation would modify an existing State program that already provides housing assistance. Therefore, no new bureaucracy needs to be created, meaning assistance would be able to reach veterans in a more expedited fashion than starting a new program from the ground up.”

The State Rental Assistance Program was established for low-income individuals or households. Currently, a portion of the grants available under the Program are reserved specifically for veterans who have completed the Veterans Transitional Housing Program known as “Veterans Haven.” This is a vocational and transitional housing program for homeless veterans, which is administered by the State’s Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs.

“Dedicating a portion of vouchers provided under the State Rental Assistance Program exclusively for veterans would be an effective means of providing housing assistance in these difficult economic times,” remarked Assemblyman Rumpf. “Housing was a prominent issue raised during a veterans’ roundtable that our Delegation hosted in our Legislative District last year. Needless to say, after all their sacrifice in defense of our nation, no veteran should ever be unable to have a roof over their head.”

Assemblywoman Gove, who serves on the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, went on to add, “Mandating that a portion of the vouchers provided through the state’s Rental Assistance Program be reserved for veterans is even more crucial in these difficult economic times in which many are finding it harder to make ends meet. With this change to the State Rental Assistance Program, fewer veterans would be on the waiting list to receive this form of housing assistance which they should be entitled to in light of their dedicated service to our country. Our Delegation is delighted that this measure has bipartisan sponsorship and is now advancing though the legislative process.”
