The 9th District delegation’s statement follows the release of a report by the State Auditor last week showing that New Jersey has spent barely 10% of the $2.4 billion in federal relief funds it received six months ago.

Since that report was issued, the governor has announced plans to release small amounts of funding to help local governments, restaurants, and small businesses that have been begging for aid since March.

“For months, Trenton has sat on billions of dollars in federal funding sent by Washington as a lifeline to New Jersey residents and businesses. Those emergency relief funds weren’t meant to collect dust in the State’s coffers.  Inexcusably, this funding has been too slow in getting to the people who need it most, including those who are essential in jumpstarting the state’s economy.

“Trenton should have distributed this money months ago to give more businesses a fighting chance. Instead, announcements about the dedication of these taxpayer funds are being made at campaign-style events just three weeks from Election Day.  Businesses were counting on an infusion of assistance, not a trickle, that for many is too little and too late.

“Meanwhile, Trenton has been on cruise control raising taxes and tolls while gearing up to borrow billions of dollars that taxpayers will pay back with interest.  That’s unacceptable when we’re already confronted with the most severe and unprecedented financial challenges that many people have experienced in their lifetimes.

“Trenton needs to do better. Necessity, not politics, should dictate the distribution of the federal CARES Act funding.”
