“Taxpayers in this state are growing increasingly apprehensive about the economic uncertainty created by the response to COVID-19. Yet with so much on the line for families and retirees, Trenton failed to pass a State Budget that addresses taxpayers’ immediate concerns about tax relief and jumpstarting the state’s economy.

“Ramrodded through by the Majority Party Leadership and expected to be signed quickly by the Governor, the State Budget has more than $200 million in pork barrel spending that could, otherwise, be used for property tax relief. The budget relies on increasing taxes on employers and health insurance policies that, undoubtedly, will be passed down to consumers who will take yet another hit in terms of the already high cost of living in New Jersey.

“It’s important to note that the rebate check that supporters of the budget have promised to taxpayers isn’t actually funded in this spending plan. Taxes will be raised in this Budget that are linked to the rebates. However, the rebates won’t be funded until the next state budget. Rebates checks won’t be issued and signed by the Governor until next summer when, conveniently, he is up for reelection. Seniors are deliberately left out of the rebate program which, as far as we are concerned, is unconscionable and unfair.

“This is a time-honored trick from the Trenton playbook to buy votes that, in the long run, will do little to help taxpayers cover the exorbitant costs of the $4.5 billion the state is borrowing for this fiscal year alone.

“There were some small victories. Funding for the Senior Freeze and Homestead Credit were restored after we took action. We want to thank the thousands of taxpayers who sent a clear and direct message to Trenton by signing our online petition to restore funding to the Senior Freeze and Homestead Credit programs which many rely on to remain in their homes.

“An ill-advised attempt to increase the sales tax on boats, which our delegation rejected due to the fact that it would have done far more far economic harm than raise revenue and would have disparately impacted our area of the state, was thankfully abandoned. And the Governor’s absurd ‘baby bonds’ initiative, which was met with fierce public criticism, never gained any real traction and was left out of the budget.

“Despite these small victories, this a State Budget that spends money taxpayers don’t have, increases taxes on businesses ensuring than New Jersey will be even more noncompetitive economically, increases spending for non-Covid-related expenditures and, last but not least, increases the state’s bonded indebtedness by billions more.

“Fiscal conservatives have their work cut out for them in the coming year as it is evident that Trenton cannot accept our new reality that taxpayers want reform and relief, not more government spending that it driving people and businesses out of the state in droves.”
