Call for Governor Murphy and Assembly Speaker Coughlin to Let the Bill Die in Committee

In forcefully representing the interests of their senior constituents, Senator Christopher Connors, Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, and Assemblywoman DiAnne Gove have called on Governor Phil Murphy and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin to refrain from supporting or advancing bill S-2425, which concerns common interest communities, including those that are age restricted.

To alert the governor and speaker to the intense level of public opposition, the 9th District Delegation provided petitions with more than 5,000 signatures all vehemently opposed to S-2425. (SenateNJ.com)

To alert the Governor and Speaker to the intense level of public opposition, the 9th District Delegation provided petitions with more than 5,000 signatures, mostly seniors living in age-restricted communities, all vehemently opposed to S-2425 for entry into the official record of public testimony.  Connors, Rumpf and Gove stand with their constituents opposed to S-2425 in rejecting any further interference from Trenton in the operation of age-restricted communities.

Senator Connors voted against the legislation when it was considered on the Senate floor in June.  Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove have pledged to vote against S-2425 should it be considered by the General Assembly.  The delegation continues to work closely with Berkeley Township Councilwoman Judy Noonan who is leading an extensive grassroots effort with senior communities in opposition to the legislation.   Efforts also have been coordinated between the 9th District delegation, other local officials, and local senior communities, including Pheasant Run in Lacey.

In their letter to Governor Murphy and Speaker Coughlin, the 9th District delegation made the following statements:

“By way of this correspondence, our delegation is formally submitting petitions in opposition to S-2425, which would ‘consolidate certain laws applicable to all types of common interest communities, a term defined to encompass homeowners associations, condominiums, and cooperatives.’

“Please accept this correspondence and the attached petitions as part of the official public record. Let the record also show that our delegation stands with these individuals in opposing S-2425, which has already passed the Senate.

“More than 5,000 persons have signed the petitions, many of whom are residents of age-restricted communities. There is expectation of receiving petitions with substantially more signatures.  In short, these individuals reject any further state interference in the operations of their communities.  To protect the autonomy of age-restricted communities, our Delegation stands with these residents in objecting to any further consideration of S-2425 or the companion measure A-3851, both which have been referenced to the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee.”
