In a letter recently sent to Governor Phil Murphy, the 9th District delegation voiced the objections conveyed by many of their constituents to the unilateral decision that the General Election be primarily conducted as a Vote-By-Mail (VBM) process.

The letter (click here for PDF) issued jointly by Connors, Rumpf and Gove to the Governor reads as follows:

August 17, 2020

RE: General Election, Demands for In-Person Voting

Dear Governor Murphy:

This correspondence concerns recently signed Executive Order 177 which sets out to create a modified vote-by-mail (VBM) election for the November 3rd General Election..

Shortly after the Executive Order was signed, our District Office began receiving numerous complaints from constituents demanding their right to vote in person. Certainly, our Delegation unequivocally stands with our constituents in supporting in-person voting for the November 3 General Election as a means of protecting the integrity of the election and ensuring transparency in the process, as is our responsibility to the people as public servants.

While we recognize that a minimum of polling places are required to be opened by county election officials under your Executive Order whereby voters can vote via a provisional ballot, our Delegation believes it is incumbent upon the state to take every action to ensure every person has the convenient ability to vote in-person. Limiting voters’ options to ensure an outcome of a primarily vote-by-mail election will only further serve to undermine that public’s confidence in the process.

Thank you, in advance, for your attention to this urgent communication.
