9th District Delegation’s Veterans Initiative Heads to Governor’s Desk

The full General Assembly passed legislation (S-956/A-911) introduced by Senator Christopher Connors, Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne Gove which would extend the current disabled veteran’s property tax exemption to disabled veteran shareholders and their surviving spouses residing in a cooperative or mutual housing corporation.

In July of last year, the full State Senate passed S-956 unanimously. Having passed both Houses of the Legislature, S-956/A-911 has been sent to Governor Murphy’s desk.

The 9th District Delegation issued the following statement on the passage of their veterans’ legislative initiative:

“Certainly, it is a disservice to allow disabled veterans shareholders and their surviving spouses residing in a cooperative or mutual housing corporation to remain ineligible to receive the disabled veteran’s property tax exemption.

“With bipartisan action, the Legislature has moved to eliminate the legal technicality that defines housing in such as a manner that denies certain disabled veterans and surviving spouses from receiving property tax relief that they should absolutely be entitled to.

“Provisions are incorporated into our legislation to ensure that only the disabled veteran or surviving spouse is the sole beneficiary of the exemption in the housing unit.

“Impacted disabled veterans and surviving spouses now need only for the Governor to sign our legislation in order to finally become eligible for the property tax exemption on account on their service and sacrifice to our nation.”

To more effectively represent the interests of their constituents, members of the 9th Legislative District have served, respectively, on the Senate and Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.
