Senator Declan O’Scanlon, Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso and Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (all R-Monmouth) today commended the Governor’s reopening of certain non-essential businesses, non-essential construction, and drive-in services. They also stressed that he needs to continue this action in the coming weeks particularly as we get closer to Memorial Day.

O’Scanlon, DiMaso and Scharfenberger welcomed today’s news that the Governor signed an order allowing non-essential businesses to open for curbside pickup and drive-in theaters to operate, but emphasized the need to lift more restrictions before Memorial Day. (WikiMedia)

“We appreciate that the Governor has taken this positive action in reopening some of our businesses. The data has shown that it’s time. We have said multiple times that our residents have overwhelmingly complied with quarantine and social distancing guidelines.

“However, our residents and businesses are at mental and economic breaking point. This first real step at reopening is what needs to be done. We know that residents and workers will continue to follow social distancing guidelines including the updated requirements that come with the Governor’s limited reopening. The ability for residents to also attend drive-in religious services is another positive step taken today that we know our residents will thoroughly appreciate and respect.

“We also need to make serious movement on reopening the shore with Memorial Day rapidly approaching. Beaches and further businesses along the Shore community are hugely dependent on the summer season.

“That said, it is also critically important that as the data continues to show a downward trend, that we continue this momentum over the coming weeks to reopen more of our state. Clearly it is time and we cannot stress to the Governor enough that this trend to reopen must move forward.”
