Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Greg McGuckin and John Catalano are responding to the Governor’s Administration decision to increase the gas tax and reaffirm that their delegation has always fought against increasing the gas tax.  The lawmakers disagree with the mandated increase and are urging the Governor to reconsider any additional taxes at this time.

The state’s gas tax will increase by 9.3 cents which will skyrocket New Jersey to the top of the list with the fourth highest gas tax in the country. In 2016, Senator Holzapfel and Assemblyman McGuckin fought Governor Christie and the Democrat-controlled Legislature on the gas tax hike.  Today, the 10th District Legislators released the following statement on the issue.

“Our vote against the gas tax increase in 2016 was a vote to help our overtaxed residents.  Today, in the wake of the extended shutdowns under Governor Murphy’s executive orders, the only answer that Trenton has to get our state back on track is to raise taxes.  Increasing the gas tax won’t solve our financial problems.  This tax should have never been allowed in the first place.

“The provision in the 2016 law is now coming back to haunt us.  Due to the Governor’s stay at home orders the roughly $2 billion that the gas tax raises each year hasn’t been reached.  Once again, this gives the Governor and his administration the ability to raise our taxes without the consent of legislature or the people.

“We will continue to disagree with the Governor on this issue and fight for our residents who don’t deserve these unending tax increases, especially during this unprecedented time.”
