In response to yet another attempt by the New Jersey Board of Education to avoid public comment, District 10 lawmakers—Senator Jim Holzapfel, Assemblyman Greg McGuckin, and Assemblyman John Catalano—have co-sponsored a bill that would increase transparency by requiring all public meetings to be accessible online and in person.

The State Board of Education has announced that they will be holding their December 7th meeting virtually and no public testimony is allowed.

“It’s a disturbing pattern and one that should concern all of us,” said Senator Holzapfel. “We can agree or disagree with their decisions, but there is no excuse for not allowing the public to comment on controversial policies that will impact their children’s’ education.”

As a result of The Boards’ decision to withhold public testimony on their meetings, the legislators have signed onto bill S-3299/A-4669 which will mandate that meetings be accessible both in person and online.

“The Board of Education needs to stop dodging the public because they won’t face the fact that their new agendas threaten our children’s innocence and waste precious taxpayer dollars,” added Assemblyman McGuckin. “All voices need to be heard and all parents have a right to express their opinion even if it differs from the Board.”

Despite all schools and businesses being open to the public and local school board meetings being held in person, the State Board of Education continues to host virtual meetings. The legislators believe that the Board is hiding behind Governor Murphy and his continued government overreach.

“The Board continues to hide under the veil of Covid and our Governor is allowing it and thus silencing his critics,” continued Assemblyman Catalano. “It’s appalling that we now need to sponsor legislation to have our residents’ voices be heard.”
