The New Jersey Senate approved legislation today sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado that allows the surviving spouse of a decedent to use their motor vehicle until the vehicle registration expires.

“The last thing someone needs to worry about after the death of a loved one is a trip to the motor vehicle commission,” said Corrado (R-40). “This commonsense legislation will remove unnecessary government red tape and allow surviving spouses to use their decedent’s vehicle until the registration expires.”

Under current law, a surviving spouse may operate a motor vehicle under a decedent’s registration certificate for 30 days.

Corrado’s bill, S-3424, allows the surviving spouse, or other family member, to operate the decedent’s vehicle until the registration expires.
