“I want to send a loud and clear message that sexual harassment will not be tolerated,” said Corrado (R-40). “News reports, and testimony we have heard in Trenton indicate sexual misconduct is more prevalent than we could have imagined. That has to end. The Legislature will lead by example with a no-nonsense policy that clearly provides protections from harassment and assault.”

The new law (A3312/S1972) mandates the Legislature to adopt a policy prohibiting sexual harassment by members, officers, and employees, and requires appropriate measures be taken to ensure the prohibited conduct does not occur.

“The current environment reminds us that we cannot assume proper behavior,” added Corrado. “All reports of misconduct will be thoroughly investigated with discretion and authority.”

The new law establishes procedures for reporting and investigation complaints, and guidelines for final determinations, remediation, discipline, and prohibited conduct.

In addition, the policy must include provisions regarding confidentiality, retaliation, and false accusations.
