“The gap between military life and civilian employment can leave our veterans feeling frustrated. It’s time to bridge that gap,” Sen. Kristin Corrado said. “Veterans gain an abundance of experience throughout the course of their service to our country. They have skills that are an asset to a wide variety of employers and industries. The creation of a veteran transition program can provide services members with opportunities that will match their skill sets with job openings in their area.”

Veterans who experience a traumatic event, such as a service-related injury, are more likely to have difficulty find a job when they return home, according to the Pew Trust.

More than 30 percent of active and retired military personnel consider transitioning back to civilian life to be the most significant challenge facing today’s veterans.

The lawmakers’ bill, S-2719, would require the veteran training program to integrate basic skills and occupational training.

“We must do everything in our power to ensure that our veterans have a smooth transition to civilian life after serving our nation so honorably,” said Singleton (D-Burlington). “Many of these men and women gained valuable skills while serving in our armed forces, skills that undoubtedly would make them an asset to potential employers. By expanding job training opportunities for these veterans, we are demonstrating our sincere gratitude for their service.”
