“Local police officers must have access to school blueprints to ensure they are never blind before entering a building during a crisis,” Bucco said. “In an emergency, a 30-second delay in the response of law enforcement could cost lives. This law will ensure local law enforcement officials have the information they need to familiarize themselves with school blueprints prior to an emergency situation, so they know where to go and what to do to protect students and teachers from harm.”

Bucco’s bipartisan legislation, S-2676, directs a board of education and chief school administrator of a nonpublic school to provide revised copies to law enforcement whenever there is a change to the blueprints or maps.

He noted that recent local events show the significant need for this law. This morning at 7:30 a.m., prior to the bill signing, the Morris County School of Technology in Denville was put on lockdown due to a threat, which was later found to be unsubstantiated.

“Requiring school boards to provide law enforcement with copies of blue prints and maps of schools and school grounds is common sense in today’s day and age,” Bucco added. “Providing police with critical information will help them to make quicker and safer decisions in an event of an emergency, such as an active shooter situation. We must continue to do everything we can to keep our children and teachers safe in school.”
