Says It’s Not a Full Solution to MVC’s Problems, But It’s Progress for Drivers

“Knowing that agencies would be overwhelmed after months of being closed, I’ve been working non-stop since May to offer practical solutions that could help drivers to avoid long lines at the MVC,” said Bucco (R-25). “I’m glad Governor Murphy has signed into law an important bipartisan bill I co-sponsored that will allow more drivers to renew their licenses online while skipping the trip to the MVC.”

Bucco sponsored S-2747, which authorizes the MVC to extend the time that a stored driver’s license or identification card photo can be used from 8 years to 12 years.

The legislation also allows stored photos to be used indefinitely for those over the age of 65, and allows for agencies to reserve certain times to provide appointments to senior citizens or those with certain medical conditions during the pandemic.

The governor also signed A-4520, which allows people who move to New Jersey from other states during the pandemic up to 120 days to obtain a New Jersey driver’s license and to register their vehicle. In regular times, new residents are required to obtain a New Jersey license and registration within 60 days.

Last week, Bucco urged the governor to sign both bills into law.

“I’m glad the governor agreed that the bill I sponsored makes sense,” added Bucco. “We shouldn’t force people to go to the MVC just to get a new picture taken when they already have a digital picture stored in their computers. Allowing the old pictures to be used for another four-year renewal will allow those transactions to be conducted through the MVC website and save a lot of drivers a lot of hassle. Taken together, these bills will make it possible for more drivers to conduct their business online, while reducing the lines for those who still need to visit an agency. It’s not a full solution to all of the problems that plague the MVC, but it’s progress that will help many drivers.”
