“Identification Cards are required to open bank accounts, cash checks, travel, and access services,” said Bucco (R-25). “It is important to ensure that the cost of identification cards will not be an obstacle for those with limited funds.”

Under Bucco’s bill, S-2954, identification card fees would be waived for any individual who provides proof of disability or a homeless person who submits validation of temporary residence through a social worker or emergency shelter coordinator.

“When a person obtains an ID card it can open the door to new opportunities and erase some of the stigma associated with their current circumstances,” said Bucco. “The card could even help someone get an interview or land a job, rent an apartment, or build a future.”

Issued by the state Motor Vehicle Commission, standard identification cards cost $18, duplicate ID cards are $5, and card renewals are $18. REAL ID identification cards are available for $29.
