“Flying the American flag is an expression of love of country and our fellow citizens. The flag is a unifying symbol, which we rallied around after 9/11,” Brown said. “I think keeping these flags in place recaptures the unity we all felt at the time and need more than ever now.”

The bill, S-2909, authorizes a person to display the American flag on a bridge or overpass that is on or travels over property of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and South Jersey Transportation Authority, provided that the person receives permission from the authority through a permit process established by the authority and the flag is properly maintained by the person and displayed in a manner consistent with the rules and customs deemed the proper manner to display the flag.

Since 9/11, many Americans in a spontaneous outpouring of patriotism and support displayed American flags on New Jersey highway overpasses. Last month, both authorities began removing the flags.
