Three bills sponsored by Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington), Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset, Mercer, Hunterdon, Middlesex) and Senator Sam Thompson (R-Burlington, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean) to appropriate more than $91 million to go to various open space, recreation and conservation projects were all passed by the New Jersey Senate.

All three bills use money from dedicated corporation business tax revenues to provide grants or other funding to develop or acquire land for use as open space.

“This money will go a long way in helping to develop land for recreation purposes in densely populated areas and counties,” Senator Bateman, sponsor of S-3352 said. “Because of this bill, more than $71 million in grants will go towards worthy projects throughout the state that will ensure our residents can enjoy the beautiful outdoors.”

Thompson’s bill, S-3353, appropriates $11.3 million to the Department of Environmental Protection for State capital and park development projects.

“I think outdoorsmen are going to like this a lot,” Senator Thompson said. “This money will go towards making improvements at boating and fishing access facilities, camp sites, as well as other infrastructure projects.”

Allen’s legislation, S-3354, allocates approximately $8.9 million to the DEP in order to provide grants to certain non-profit organizations to acquire or develop lands for recreation and conservation purposes.

“We have so many groups that do a lot of great work in preserving our history and our natural beauty,” Senator Allen said. “There are a number of exciting projects underway all of over New Jersey, and I think it’s great that we’re able to lend them a hand.”
