Beck, Bateman Veterans Property Tax Relief Measure Advanced by Committee

A proposal by Senators Jennifer Beck (R- Monmouth) and Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex) to extend tax benefits to eligible veterans residing in continuing care retirement communities was advanced today by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee.

The Senators’ S880 extends the state’s current veterans property tax deduction and disabled veterans property tax exemption to eligible veterans living at continuing care retirement communities. Under current law, honorably discharged veterans who own a home and served in a qualifying combat zone receive a $250 property tax deduction, while those that are deemed “totally and permanently disabled” are exempt from property taxes altogether.

“Veterans who have served this country shouldn’t lose out on a financial benefit they earned because they choose to live at a continuing care community,” said Beck. “Property taxes are factored into the living costs of those communities and the veterans footing those bills should receive the same break as their peers fortunate enough to still own their own homes.”

Currently, residents of continuing care retirement communities are eligible for the Homestead Benefit Program.

“Veterans living in an assisted living facility earned this benefit the same as those living in their own homes,” added Bateman. “They each risked their life fighting for this country and it’s the least we can do to make sure they now receive the same assistance.”

The legislation requires voter approval of a constitutional amendment. Senators Beck and Bateman, along with Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) are sponsors of SCR39, the companion bill amending the constitution. SCR39 was advanced by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee in March.
