The repeal legislation, S-2717, was introduced during the New Jersey Senate session on Thursday, October 20, 2016.

“Legislators who supported the gas tax increase see the momentum building behind our repeal effort, and they’re worried,” said Bateman. “They’re feeling the pressure and grumbling behind the scenes for us to stop. That’s a sign that our online petition effort is working and that our efforts on behalf of taxpayers to repeal the gas tax increase are not in vain.”

Nearly 15,000 people have signed the online petition to repeal the gas tax increase since it was launched just over a week ago.

Doherty noted that people are shocked to learn the details of the gas tax increase that weren’t widely publicized when the bill was rushed through the Legislature and signed into law earlier this month.

As an example, he highlighted provisions that allow for the gas tax to rise in future years above the initial 23 cent per gallon increase that takes effect in less than two weeks if revenue targets aren’t met.

“People are apoplectic when they hear that the new law allows for automatic gas tax increases each and every year,” added Doherty. “They weren’t told the full truth, and they’re mad. Our petition gives those who are outraged the opportunity to make a real difference in the effort to repeal the gas tax increase.”
