Legislature also Suspends 2.5% COAH Tax

Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-16) issued the following statement today following Governor Chris Christie’s announcement today that he abolished the Council on Affordable Housing (COAH):

“As the original sponsor of legislation to end the failed Council on Affordable Housing, I applaud the Governor’s decision today. By abolishing COAH, we are helping to protect municipalities from heavy handed state oversight, and duplicative government services.

“Hardworking people need and deserve a safe, affordable place where they can raise their families, rest their heads and be proud to call their home. Unworkable affordable housing rules implemented by COAH have hurt that laudable goal. Moving forward we need to provide for a smart growth approach to development focused on results rather than ideology and I am optimistic that is the direction we are headed.

“I also applaud the Legislature for passing a bipartisan bill that removes a 2.5% commercial development fee that hindered job growth and economic development. This fee made it infinitely more difficult to convince potential employers to move to or expand their operations in New Jersey.

“Both of these steps will go a long way to fixing New Jersey’s antiquated affordable housing rules.”
